World War II was greatly influenced by the aftermath of World War I. The war was between the allies, France, Britain, the U.S., and the Soviet Union, and the Axis powers, Germany, Japan, and Italy. It was a total war, involving all resources to win. World War II was greatly influenced by the aftermath of World War I, sparked by Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939. Woke Definition and Culture

Our current political climate leads to many ideas and words being twisted and  mischaracterized  by  both  left and right-leaning voices. This is especially true with the word, “woke”  which has been  misused often in political discourse. There is immense value in understanding the true  origin of the  word “woke” and making strides to understand woke culture to enhance our critical  thinking skills. My definition of "woke culture" has not changed. I listen to a lot of political commentary which I belie...

I Stand Here Ironing: Analysis of Growth Through Pain

Image
Tillie Olsen uses the iron as a metaphor for the struggle in Emily and her mother’s life. As  mentioned  throughout the story, the iron plays an important role in presenting the feelings and  emotions felt by  the characters. The iron is used to represent how Emily and her mother feel  helplessly  moved by the  problems in their life. They each want each other to know that they are more  than their struggles, and  though it may seem like they are broken, they are actually, “..more than  helpless before the iron.”  (p.349).         The relationship between Emily and her mother is an important part of understanding the iron as a metaphor. Emily’s mother, whose name is not mentioned, was a lone parent with four children and, as a result, did not spend much time with Emily. Throughout the story, Emily is shown to be an outsider. Her mother,...

Anorexia Nervosa

Image
Anorexia Nervosa is a severe eating disorder that should be taken seriously. There are extreme physical consequences for anorexia if treatment is not provided. Those who seek help for this disorder are extremely likely to get diagnosed early and receive care from a disorders specialist to improve their health. Many people think that anorexia is a trivial body image problem, but this is simply not the case.         The symptoms of classic anorexia are severe and can have lasting damage to the body if not handled correctly. Sufferers of anorexia experience extreme weight loss or lack of appropriate weight gain. Anorexic patients intentionally restrict the number of calories they intake and the kinds of foods they eat. These people tend to have a distorted body image believing that they are overweight when they are really dangerously skinny. Some anorexics exercise compulsively, binge eat, and purge. Anorex...

The Peloponnesian War: Athens vs Sparta

Image
The Peloponnesian War was an important war fought between Athens and Sparta from 431-404 BCE. Historians continue to debate the cause of this great war. Thucydides wrote a highly regarded account of the war in his book titled The History of the Peloponnesian War in which he describes the causes of the war as follows: Sparta wanted more power and military glory, Athens was unfair to its neighboring cities and allies, and city-states had competing political ideologies. Thucydides understood the importance of the war and expressed that understanding when he said, “ My belief was based on the fact that the two sides were a...

Should College Be Free?

Image
A common stressor of Americans is the cost of college, and there is a lot of contention around  offering  college for free. The right and left sides of politics are very divided on this issue, the left  advocating for  free college and the right being more than skeptical of the left’s advocacy. “Why Free  College i s Necessary” published fall 2015, and written by Tressie McMillian Cottom, a sociology  professor at  Virginia Commonwealth University argues for the existence of free college while “The  Case  Against Free  College”...
