Comparisons of India and Turkey: Regional Geography and Human Rights
India and Turkey have common issues
with the violations of human rights against their citizens which may be resolved
through constant exposing of their governments’ actions to allow the people to
get their power back. Both countries have problems that are inherent in their
histories and present at the higher levels of government. The best way to
create change in a corrupt system is to expose it so the people can uprise for
real change.
India
is a country located in the southern portion of Asia bordering the Bay of
Bengal and the Arabian Sea. The country can be found bordering the countries,
Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bhutan. Being the
second-most populous country, it has 1/6 of the world’s population. India is an
extremely diverse country with hundreds of languages spoken there and thousands
of small ethnic groups. Those living in the north-central and northwestern areas
are usually ethnically connected to Europeans and Indo-Europeans while for those
living in northeastern India the population is more ethnically Burman and
Tibetan.
Corruption
in India has its roots in its early colonial days, starting with the British
Raj period, and the only difference is that the kind of corruption has changed
over the decades. India ranked only 94th out 0f 176 countries in
2013 in the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, and it
has been estimated that $39 billion has been misappropriated by government
officials, cited The Central Vigilance Commission. This has a horrible effect
on the country because it deliberately misleads the people about where their
tax dollars are being spent and adds to a distrust in the governmental system’s
ability to serve the people.
Turkey
is positioned at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Balkans, Caucasus, and
Middle East. Because of its unique positioning, partly in Europe and partly in
Asia, it has been used a crossroads between the two continents. Bordering the
country is the Black Sea, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq, and Syria. Most
of the people speak Turkish and a small minority speak Kurdish, an Arabic
language. The primary ethnic group is Kurds. There are six other sizeable,
ethnic groups besides them in Turkey.
Though
Turkey is a constitutional republic, with executive representation it has
massive problems with corruption in its government. In Turkey, there are
restrictions on media reporting, arbitrary killings with political motivations,
torture due to politics, suspicious disappearances of political figures, and
detention of tens of thousands of people. Turkey’s government was quick to
ignore these issues, except for limited actions. This is very destructive to
the people because it causes distrust, anger, and fear in the people.
The
solution to Turkey’s and India’s problem of corruption is exposure to the truth
to their people. Transparency is needed to rebuild trust and allow the people
to construct a plan of how to best handle corrupt people in power. Whistleblowers
need to step forward and risks need to be taken in order to get the countries to a state of calm. The citizens need to stand up for their rights with courage.
